Getting Invisalign at Myers Orthodontics will dramatically improve the function and aesthetics of your teeth and smile. In order to get the most out of your Invisalign treatment, Myers Orthodontics has some tips to care for your Invisalign aligners this Spring. It’s important to keep your Invisalign in good shape, clean them often, and wear the aligners as instructed to follow your orthodontic treatment plan.

Good, Consistent Oral Hygiene

1. Good, Consistent Oral Hygiene

Standard oral hygiene practices still apply when you have Invisalign. You should continue to brush your teeth twice daily at the minimum and after meals if you’ve consumed something especially sweet. And, you should already be flossing once a day, but this becomes even more important when wearing Invisalign. You will need to add an additional step to your oral hygiene routine by brushing and cleaning your clear aligners daily. This will ensure bacteria and food particles do not build up.

2. Cleaning Your Invisalign Aligners Daily

If you get into the routine of cleaning your Invisalign and your teeth after every meal, your orthodontic treatment will go swimmingly. We recommend the following for all patients with Invisalign and Invisalign Teen:

  • Just as you would brush your teeth, apply a small amount of toothpaste to your toothbrush and brush the entire aligner in small circles, both inside and out.
  • Once you’ve finished brushing, rinse off the toothpaste with lukewarm water and confirm you’ve gotten rid of any food particles or tartar build up.
  • Brush and floss your teeth to ensure your teeth are clean and particle free before placing your Invisalign back onto your teeth.
  • Soak your aligners at least once a day. Soaking is a great way to make sure your Invisalign is clean and fresh. There are specific Invisalign cleaners and soaks, or you can use any denture soak as well.
  • Avoid hot water: Do not wash your Invisalign in the dishwasher, leave them in your pockets, run them through the washing machine, or boil them. The hot water will distort and warp the aligners.

3. Remove Invisalign at Mealtimes

Invisalign aligners should always be removed to eat or drink anything that is not water. This is crucial for the care and function of your aligners. Myers Orthodontics recommends having a specific case to put your aligners in at mealtimes. By always having this case with you, you can easily remember to remove your Invisalign prior to eating. Our orthodontists and staff also recommend drinking plenty of water throughout the day to keep your mouth and teeth hydrated as you undergo orthodontic treatment.
