How to maintain dental hygiene with braces

Oral hygiene is always important, but maintaining it with braces is a top priority. It will keep your treatment on track, and keep your teeth in great condition for your post-braces reveal. Ways to maintain your dental hygiene with braces:

  • Brush: Brush your teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush, preferably after every meal. If you are eating without a toothbrush handy, at least rinse your mouth out by swishing water around after your meal. Small brushes, called proxy brushes, are a great tool to have. These little brushes look similar to a pipe cleaner and you can use them to get in between brackets and wires.
  • Floss: Floss at least once per day! Wax floss is the easiest to use, but if you find typical floss difficult with braces, try an orthodontic flosser or floss threader.
  • Watch what you eat and drink: Avoid food and drinks that are high in sugar to avoid tooth decay. Additionally, there are foods you need to avoid with braces to avoid damaging your braces. These include sticky, chewy foods, gum, and hard foods such as popcorn, raw carrots, apples, and more.
  • Always be prepared: Make yourself a braces care kit that you can leave in your purse, backpack or car. Items to consider include a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, mouthwash, proxy brushes, and dental wax. This way you will never be without a convenient way to clean your teeth!
  • Come see us: Keep up on your regular appointments with us so we can monitor your progress, make any necessary adjustments, and answer any questions you might have. Don’t forget you can always contact us in case of an emergency or with any concerns.
