At Myers Orthodontics, one of the most common questions that we get from patients is, "why do I constantly clench my teeth when I sleep?" So, we wanted to give you a comprehensive list of on tips that can be beneficial to you!

How To Diagnose The Problem

The grinding of your teeth is often hard to diagnose when you sleep by yourself. Some people think of it as more of a nuisance than an actual problem. However, dentists actually have a term for the grinding of your teeth called bruxism. Although hard to diagnose yourself, dentists typically can tell whether or not you suffer from bruxism by the wear and tear on the enamel of your teeth.

Symptoms Of Teeth Grinding

There are a couple of good way to tell if the grinding of your teeth is causing dental problems for you:

  • Morning headaches

  • Chipped or cracked teeth

  • Sensitive or loose teeth

  • Indentations on your tongue

  • Sore jaw or facial muscles

If you see these symptoms, check in with your local Knoxville Orthodontist to evaluate the possible causes. If not addressed, bruxism can cause damage to the tooth enamel or even broken teeth.

Avoid Clenching Your Teeth

A lot of the times, clenching and grinding your teeth is caused by heavy stress or emotional stress. A good way to start addressing these issues is to find out what is stressing you out:

  • Let go of negativity before bed time

  • Ask your partner to help you out

  • Consider getting a mouthguard
