Foods to Avoid

We’re proud to offer a wide variety of orthodontic treatments along with the compassionate care needed to ensure that your orthodontic process is a complete success. We promise to be with you every step of the way with our help and advice. One bit of advice that we’d like to provide for you right now lies in the food that you eat while you’re wearing braces. When you wear braces, there are certain types of food that you should avoid, which include the following.

Sticky Foods

The first type of food that we recommend avoiding is sticky food. The reason why sticky food can be problematic is that this food can get stuck in your braces and tug at them, potentially loosening or even pulling off your brackets or wires. Some of these sticky foods include:

  • Gum

  • Caramel

  • Starburst

  • Toffee

  • Licorice

  • Tootsie Rolls

Hard Foods

We also recommend that patients with braces also avoid hard foods. Hard foods can sometimes break the brackets or wires of your braces. Some examples of these hard foods that you should avoid are:

  • Nuts

  • Chips

  • Hard Taco Shells

  • Bagels

  • Apples

  • Carrots

  • Pizza Crust

  • French Bread Crust

Sugary Foods

Unlike the previous two types of food, you don’t actually have to completely avoid eating sugary food – just make sure to consume it in moderation. Sugary food can lead to tooth decay and other oral problems, which is why you’ll want to limit yourself to eating or drinking the following about once per day:

  • Pie

  • Cake

  • Ice Cream

  • Cookies

  • Candy

  • Soda

  • Sweet Tea

  • Kool-Aid

  • Gatorade
