Why Do Teens Need Braces?

Clear Braces

Getting braces during the teenage years has become so common in our society that it's almost something of a rite of passage – most people just expect that at some point during adolescence, a teen will need braces. But considering that we can move healthy teeth at any age, is there a reason for most people getting braces during high school?
As it turns out, there are some very good ones. For one, adolescence is the first time that all the permanent teeth have grown in, which lets us act and make changes to the permanent, adult smile. Additionally, teens experience a higher metabolism and growth spurts that we can use to improve treatment times and help them reach their smile faster. Finally, there's a social element. Braces are so common for teens that most teenagers are very receptive to the prospect of getting them – in fact, some teens want braces just to fit in with their friends!

Orthodontic Treatment Options for Teens

Every teen is different, and we're proud to offer a variety of treatment options to suit each patient's needs. Depending on the patient's orthodontic condition, our treatment options include:

  • Traditional Metal Braces: This is what most people think of when they hear the word "braces." Made from high-grade stainless steel, metal braces offer a reliable, durable, and cost-effective form of treatment for virtually any orthodontic condition.
  • Clear Braces: Clear braces use the same mechanisms as traditional braces, with one key difference: the brackets are made from a transparent ceramic material that blends in with teeth. This gives them an excellent aesthetic appeal, but also makes them slightly more expensive and fragile than regular braces.
  • Lingual Braces: Lingual braces are a truly invisible orthodontic treatment. While they work the same as braces and are still made from stainless steel, the brackets are mounted to the inside (tongue side) of the teeth, making them completely invisible from the outside! While they're the least noticeable form of treatment, they're considerably more expensive than regular braces and take more time to adjust to.
  • Invisalign Teen: Invisalign does away with brackets and wires entirely, instead relying on a series of clear, removable aligners to straighten teeth. Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible when worn and can be popped in and out to eat, drink, brush, and floss, which means teenagers don't have to worry about having braces for school pictures and other milestones and can still enjoy their favorite foods. Plus, Invisalign Teen comes with a number of advantages custom-tailored to the teenage lifestyle.
