The Difference Between Permanent and Removable Retainers

A removable retainer means exactly that: you can remove it. One of the advantages of having a removable retainer is that you can remove it when it's time to eat. This reduces the chances of getting food stuck in between the wires. Another advantage is that you can floss and brush your teeth without a wire getting in the way. A removable retainer is easy to lose, however. You may also forget to put it back in your mouth, allowing your teeth to shift out of place again. Removable retainers are also somewhat unsightly as you'll have a wire going straight across your teeth.

Permanent retainers, on the other hand, are fitted behind your teeth so they're not visible. This makes them a more attractive option compared to removable retainers. Once permanent retainers are inside your mouth, you can forget about them. You don't have to worry about losing them. The disadvantage with permanent retainers, however, is that cleaning your teeth can be challenging. There are also foods, such as toffee and gummies that you should avoid.

Can You Combine the Two?

Sometimes, you can get a combination. For example, you can get permanent retainers for your bottom teeth and removable retainers for your upper teeth. This is something you should discuss with Dr. Myers. He can take a look at your teeth and give you personalized treatment.
