Taking Care Of Your Braces During Halloween

“Trick or Treat, give me something good to eat.” If you eat the wrong Halloween treats, it could be scary for your braces. Myers Orthodontics wants you to have fun on Halloween even though you have braces. After years of working with patients, we have come up with a list of treats that you can eat and those that you should avoid. You don’t want to ruin your fun with a trip to our Knoxville orthodontics office to fix your braces, but if you do have a problem, we are here to help.

Treats You Should Avoid

You should avoid sticky, hard, chewy, or crunchy treats, including caramel, licorice, jelly beans, gum, candy corn, hard candy, lollipops, chips, and pretzels. Many of these treats don’t easily dissolve in your mouth, so they get stuck in your braces, and the hard or crunchy treats can break a bracket or wire.

What should you do with those treats? Maybe you could share them with family and friends that don’t have braces.

Treats You Can Enjoy

You can enjoy treats that are soft and easy-to-chew. The American Association of Orthodontics suggests treats that dissolve easily, such as chocolate that melts-in-your mouth, peanut butter cups, soft candy bars, peppermint patties, and soft cookies.

Brush and Floss

You don’t want those sugary Halloween treats leaving you with ghoulish cavities. After you eat your candy, you should floss your teeth to dislodge any food stuck in your braces and then brush thoroughly to get all that sugar off of your teeth.
